What is microlearning, and when does it work?

Microlearning means learning in small chunks. Short lessons are easier to start, but whether anything sticks depends on how they’re put together.

Short isn’t enough on its own

A short video isn’t automatically good microlearning. A good chunk does one thing, like explaining a difference, showing how something works, or testing you on one point. And the chunks add up to something bigger.

When short lessons help

When they don’t

Some skills need long practice, feedback and proper concentration. Complicated arguments can be misleading when they’re cut into pieces. Short lessons are a good way in, but some subjects need more than that.

What makes a good one

  1. It’s in order. Each lesson builds on the last.
  2. It tests you. You have to recall or use what you learned.
  3. It uses pictures where they help. Tables, charts and examples, when text isn’t enough.
  4. It has an end. You can see how far through you are.
