Is there a Duolingo for general knowledge?

Not really, no. The reason why is worth knowing before you pick an app.

Why it works so well for languages

Languages have a few things going for them that most subjects don’t.

Take those away and the format struggles.

What goes wrong with general knowledge

“General knowledge” isn’t one subject. It’s every subject, with no obvious order to learn them in. And most of what people want is to understand why things happen, which multiple choice is bad at testing.

That’s why trivia apps feel a bit empty. They copy the streaks and the tapping, drop the structure, and leave you with a pile of unconnected facts. The game side was never what made Duolingo work.

What does carry over

Short sessions. Five minutes a day is fine. Spreading practice out beats cramming, whatever the subject.

Being tested. Having to recall an answer is one of the best-supported ways to learn anything, and it works for history and biology as well as it does for vocab.

Being easy to start. A lot of learning stalls because opening the app feels like a decision. Opening Instagram doesn’t.

What replaces the fixed course

If one course can’t work for everyone, you need a separate course for each question. That’s what Doomlearning does. You type what you want to know, it plans a course around it and writes it card by card, with a quiz at the end of each chapter. Here’s how it works.

The downside is that Duolingo’s Spanish course has been refined by linguists using data from millions of learners, and a course written for your question hasn’t. It covers far more ground, but it’s less polished. If you want Spanish, use Duolingo. If you want to know why bread rises, nobody has made that course, and we’ll write it for you.

The part no app can do for you

What Duolingo really gets right is that people open it every day. That’s a habit, and habits stick to moments: waiting for the kettle, the queue at the shop, ten minutes before bed. Pick a moment you already have and attach the new thing to it. Our doomscrolling guide explains why that works better than willpower.

Try it free

The first chapter of every course is free.

Free to try. No card needed.
